В 2011 году Dream Theater докрутили очередной виток своего развития, и пружина под названием «A Dramatic Turn of Events» уверенно выпрямилась, сняв напряжение с хоть и сравнительно немногочисленной, но очень преданной категории поклонников прогрессивного метала. Можно сказать, что Dream Theater вернулись к более простой ритмической структуре — наподобие той, которую чаще всего используют пауэр-метал-группы. Заигрывания с галопирующим трэшем, ню-металом, а также около-симфо-блэк-металлической мелодикой, которыми изобиловали два предпоследних альбома, остались в прошлом. Более того, группа решила отказаться даже от горячо любимых ею периодических вкраплений Rush-образного прог-рока. Да, можно сказать, случилось то, чего хотели те поклонники группы, которые жаждали возвращения времен «Images and Words».
