Группа Riger была образована в 1996 году в немецком городе Франкфурт-на-Одере. Уже дебютное демо "Die Belagerung", вышедшее в том же году, показало недюжий потенциал немецких язычников, после чего их быстренько подписал австрийский лейбл CCP. Первый альбом, "Der Wanderer", вышел в 1998. Музыканты представили на суд слушателей смесь дэта и симфо-блэка с клавишами, с патриотичными тексами и эпичной лирикой на немецком языке. Второй альбом вышел через год на том же лейбле.
