Первые признаки жизни голландская пауэр-прогрессив-команда «Elegy» подала в 1986 году, выпустив демо «Matricide». Вторая демка - «Better than bells» - появилась лишь через пару лет, но зато позволила группе поиграть на разогреве у «King Diamond» и «Angel witch». В 1989-м в коллективе, первое время не отличавшемся особой стабильностью, появились барабанщик Эд Уорби и вокалист Эдвард Ховингс (остальными членами команды были тогда гитаристы Хенк Лаарс и Арно ван Брюссель и басист Мартин Хелмантель), при участии которых было записано третье демо «The elegant solution».Несмотря на такое количество пробных шаров, контракт «Элегии» удалось заполучить только в 1991 году, когда на нее обратил внимание лейбл «Shark records», искавший молодые таланты.
