В 1979-м Хэммилл в роли вокалиста засветился на первом сольнике Роберта Фриппа. В том же году закончилось долговременное партнерство музыканта с фирмой "Charisma Records", и на протяжении 80-х его альбомы издавались различными маленькими лейблами. Лучшими работами этого периода считаются "A Black Box" и "Sitting Targets", где Питер удачно совместил экспериментально-авангардную и лиричиско-попсовую составляющие своего творчества.
