Главным образом, из-за его отказа делать что-либо похожее на обычную «стандартную» музыку и полное отсутствие каких-либо отшлифованных модных штампов, среди его почитателей много спорят, причислять ли Хэммилла к прогрессивному року. Во многих интервью, однако, сам Хэммилл заявлял, что он не хотел бы быть отнесенным к прогрессив-рок-музыке, да и к любому другому стилю вообще.
