An album with the diversity and multitude of talented musicians that Winter Thrice features certainly has its work cut out for it. Not only are Borknagar respected pioneers of the second-wave black metal sound, but additionally we have the staggering track record of every member to consider, with pedigrees stretching from the likes of Dimmu Borgir to Vintersorg. Sweetening the deal even further, former vocalist and Ulver mastermind Kristoffer ‘Garm' Rygg has returned to contribute a spot of vocals, sending expectations for this latest offering sky-high. Fortunately for everyone, Borknagar has delivered, with Winter Thrice providing a thoroughly satisfying slab of music. There's simply no capacity in which this album is a let down. Need to quench your thirst for progressive songwriting alongside suitably blackened riffage? Borknagar have catered to that in spades. Are subtle choirs and grandiosity more your thing? Such techniques are peppered throughout, adorning the swells of exciting cadences and somber passages alike. Even with everything that's going on, the atmosphere remains open and inviting, lacking the suffocating quality that often plagues similar acts.

Here’s veteran reedman Houston Person rolling in the deep again, his tone resonant as ever, his primary focus the Great American Songbook and its enduring lyricism. Unmistakably in his element, relaxed and yet fully engaged, the tenor saxophonist is clearly inspired not only by the stream of mostly classic melodies that comprise this collection, but also by the close kinship of vibraphonist Steve Nelson, pianist Lafayette Harris Jr., bassist Ray Drummond and drummer Lewis Nash.

Paul Raymond is celebrating 50 years as a professional musician by releasing his new album Rewind 50 which is a retrospective of his songwriting with various bands spanning his 50 year career. The live set will include both classic and lesser known songs from his time in bands such as UFO, Michael Schenker Group and Waysted alongside his solo work.

It’s not without highlights: Grace Jones’ Private Life is never dull and there’s an exclusive remix of Phil Collins’ The Roof Is Leaking. A whole bunch of fresh ideas for older tracks, which were rewritten bei Robert Fränzel. The recording at the Atomino Studio was a meeting of friends, a joint project with many try outs and a lot of fun. „Wooden Playground“ is the result, which will be released in the end of July. It will be the beginning of an album series from Northern Lite, which will be difficult to all other projects and which will be unplanned from the beginning till the end.
