Musical pojawił się w roku 1970 jako album koncepcyjny (zwany potocznie „brązowym albumem” ze względu na okładkę). Twórcy dzieła zdecydowali się wydać swoje dzieło w formie płytowej, ponieważ śmiały i kontrowersyjny materiał mógłby zostać niedopuszczony do realizacji na teatralnych scenach.

Jesus Christ Superstar est un opéra-rock, musique d'Andrew Lloyd Webber et lyrics de Tim Rice sorti sous la forme d'un album-concept en 1970 avant d'être porté sur scène à Broadway l'année suivante, puis au cinéma en 1973.

Il relate les derniers jours de la vie de Jésus de Nazareth tels que rapportés par le Nouveau Testament, de l'entrée à Jérusalem à la Crucifixion, en mettant en avant les relations interpersonnelles des personnages principaux, en particulier Jésus, Judas et Marie-Madeleine, relations qui ne sont pas décrites en profondeur dans les Évangiles.

Jesus Christ Superstar (Jesucristo Superstar en España o Jesucristo Superestrella en algunos países de América Latina) es una ópera rock con música de Andrew Lloyd Webber y letras de Tim Rice, que primero surgió como álbum conceptual en 1970 y un año después dio el salto a los escenarios de Broadway. Adaptado libremente de los Evangelios, el argumento se centra en los últimos siete días de la vida de Jesús de Nazaret, comenzando con los preparativos de su llegada a Jerusalén y finalizando con la crucifixión. La resurrección no está incluida de manera intencionada para evitar cualquier referencia a la divinidad del protagonista.

Andrew Lloyd Webber, Baron Lloyd-Webber, Kt (born 22 March 1948) is an English composer and impresario of musical theatre. Several of his musicals have run for more than a decade both in the West End and on Broadway. He has composed 21 musicals, a song cycle, a set of variations, two film scores, and a Latin Requiem Mass. Several of his songs have been widely recorded and were successful outside of their parent musicals, such as "The Music of the Night" and "All I Ask of You" from The Phantom of the Opera, "I Don't Know How to Love Him" from Jesus Christ Superstar, "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" from Evita, "Any Dream Will Do" from Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and "Memory" from Cats. In 2001, The New York Times referred him as "the most commercially successful composer in history". The Daily Telegraph ranked him the "fifth most powerful person in British culture" in 2008, with lyricist Don Black writing "Andrew more or less single-handedly reinvented the musical."
