Группа Danse Macabre была образована силами трёх известных музыкантов – Greeks Sotiris (Septic Flesh), George Zaharopoulos (ex-Rotting Christ) и Gunther Theys (Ancient Rites) в Афинах. 1995-й год ознаменовался записью двух демок, канувших, к сожалению, в Лету. Проект угрожал умереть, так и не родившись. Но вскоре, в 1997-м, Gunther находит единомышленников. Финский гитарист/сочинитель текстов Jan "Orkki" Yrlund (ex-Lacrimosa, ex-Two Witches, ex-Prestige, SinMasters, Ancient Rites) и бельгийский ударник Raf Corten (ex-Ancient Rites) решили не дать умереть Danse Macabre и вступили в банду.
