It’s Pink Floyd’s magisterial 1975 album Wish You Were Here – but as you’ve never heard it before. This re-imagined take on the progressive rock classic is a collaborative venture: the London Orion Orchestra form the backbone with contributions from Alice Cooper, Rick Wakeman and tribute band Australian Pink Floyd. Wish You Were Here Symphonic translates the sounds and melodies of the original album into a classical music setting – and the results are electrifying. It’s a fine choice of subject matter to transpose in this way, since the source material is symphonic in its structure and scope.

Emil Viklicky of the Czech Republic (1948) was introduced to Japanese jazz fans by Venus Records with his debut CD Sinfonietta which featured classical composer Leos Janacek's music and his own compositions based on or inspired by Moravian songs. Viklicky's second release from Venus is also a unique concept album. It's a tribute to the internationally renowned Japanese novelist Haruki Murakami, whose recent work featured Janacek's Sinfonietta as an important device. Viklicky met Murakami in 2010 and was surprised how well the writer was versed with the music of Janacek. A while later, he decided to dedicate his second album for Venus to Murakami, who is also known as a jazz afficionado.

Cassandra Wilson, coming off a three-year recording break, returns to our ears with a tribute of sorts to one of the most alluring voices of the 20th Century in Billie Holiday. The current performer wisely avoids challenging her icon's renditions of jazz and blues standards, opting instead to take the singles best known by Holiday fans and reprocess them for her own vocal style. It would be difficult to label Coming Forth By Day as a Holiday tribute if Wilson herself hadn't told us that it was.

The Beatles' catalog is full of sturdy, melodic songs that are so well-written and crafted that they are amazingly adaptable, capable of being played and sung in a variety of styles, from polka version to baroque chamber style and seemingly every stop in between. This bright, soothing set collects several Beatle classics done in bossa nova style, and yes, the songs hold up well, particularly Monique Kessous’ surprisingly effective cover of “Come Together,” Lulu Joppert’s breezy “Got to Get You into My Life,” Tanta Menezes’ jaunty “Day Tripper,” and a lush and jazzy take on “Ticket to Ride” from Taryn Szpilman.
