This is three CDs of chillout classics, laidback grooves and remixes from the legendary Café Mambo on Ibiza. The trouble is, it’s music for people who have been up all night dancing on Es and want to relax before bed, or for those who are still on Es and want to rehydrate and chill before getting back to the dance floor. At the end of the day — or in Ibiza’s case at the start of the next one — this is just cool background music, if not easy listening. It’s mixed by Café Mambo resident DJ Pete Gooding and artistes range from Lana Del Ray and London Grammar to Grace Jones and Fatboy Slim. It’s not without highlights: Grace Jones’ Private Life is never dull and there’s an exclusive remix of Phil Collins’ The Roof Is Leaking. There’s a good dub remix from The Rolling Stones in Out Of Control. We also liked Henry Mancini and His Orchestra’s Lujon.

One of the highlights of spending the day at one of Ibiza’s beach clubs is the music that soundtracks your experience. Each venue has at least one talented DJ making sure the music sets the mood for the perfect day at the beach. One such venue is Coco Beach, at the far end of Playa d’en Bossa and resident Paul Lomax has been curating the music for as long as we can remember. The good news is that there are normally compilation CDs to be purchased, to remind yourself of your day and to bring a bit of heat and put a smile on your face when your sun tan fades and you are back home. The double CD takes you from afternoon into evening on the beach and features some of the great tunes that can be heard in the beach club this summer.

Clearly there are two standards for evaluating a hits collection such as "Ultimate Divas," which proclaims that it has assembled the greatest female vocalists of our time. The first and most important standard is whether or not these are indeed the greatest female vocalists that you could put together on one album (the second caveat seems to be that the singers are of child bearing age as of 1999, since the wunderkind of the bunch is either Toni Braxton or Mary J. Blige, but I am not looking up dates of birth). This album starts with Billie Holiday and ends with Aretha Franklin, it has Lena, Horne, Sarah Vaughn and Ella Fitzgerald, you get Tina Turner and Diana Ross, there is Annie Lennox and Toni Braxton, and you have Patti LaBelle and Whitney Houston and that still leaves four more.

Jazzman Records' digging and vibing continues by way of their sixth volume chronicling the expansive world of spiritual jazz. The 14 tracks collected here date from 1960 to 1986 and include a few obvious but undeniably great landmark examples of vocal and spiritual jazz, as well as many lesser-known yet no less enjoyable selections. Beginning with Max Roach and then-wife Abbey Lincoln's rage-filled "Tears for Johannesburg," we then move through years and temperament with pieces from Pharoah Sanders, Charles Mingus, Clifford Jordan, Eddie Gale, and Gary Bartz. There are lots of ensembles and larger groups who bring the collective energy and impulses of the music and lyrics to full force.
