Imagine – The Remixes, a remix compilation album was released, following on the success from Armin Van Buuren's third studio album Imagine. It contained 17 DJ remixes over a two disc set, some featured on the album's singles and some that are exclusive to this compilation. This remix edition of Imagine has been released across the globe, including Europe, North America, Argentina, Australia & Asia.

The track was first released in the United Kingdom on 15 April 2011 as the second single from Clare's debut studio album, The Lateness of the Hour (2011). The track was written by Alex Clare and Jim Duguid and produced by Diplo and Switch, with co-production from Ariel Rechtshaid and Mike Spencer. Musically, "Too Close" is a dubstep song with breakbeat and soul influences. Lyrically, the song describes the protagonist who is not ready for a committed relationship and he must end things with his love interest in good terms.
