This terrific recording from young French saxophone star Emile Parisien special. There’s an easy creativity in the compositions that brings a constant variety to the set, and a total commitment to each of the styles the group work through. It’s a new group, too, audibly enjoying discovering what they can do. Parisien, a multi-award winner in France, has departed from his decade-old quartet, and recruited three new cohorts – Manu Codjia on guitar, Simon Tailleu on bass, and Mario Costa on drums. Joachim Kühn, who lived for many years in Paris, makes it a quintet, and brings half a century’s experience of every kind of piano playing into the mix.

After four post-college years trying to turn her music major into a singing career in New York, Shola Adisa-Farrar, FCLC ’06, was unsatisfied. She packed up and moved to Paris, where, like a lot of expats, she survived at first by cobbling together a variety of jobs. She worked as an au pair, taught English to business executives, and led walking tours of the city. But she also networked ferociously and landed singing and acting gigs. This past April, a Paris label released her first album, Lost Myself, recorded with a French jazz quintet.

While saxophonist Eric Alexander has garnered critical acclaim from every corner, what has mattered most has been to establish his own voice within the illustrious bop-based jazz tradition, which is exactly what he does on ‘Second Impression’. The close-knit ensemble coupled with the bass-clef contributions of the extraordinary Bob Cranshaw, make for a listening experience not soon forgotten.

Having amassed 20 Grammy nominations, four statues and three Emmy wins, Gordon Goodwin is the most decorated big band leader in the 21st century. After all six of his Big Phat Band albums have garnered Grammy nominations or wins, he’s not elusive about why he trimmed his large 18-piece ensemble for an outing as the 8-member Little Phat Band, which will release their debut album, An Elusive Man, on September 9 via the Music of Content label.

Rocheman Manuel has always distinguished by an obvious virtuosity and a sense of harmony that make him a refined pianist particularly at ease in the trio. Between 1990 and 2000, the old (unique) student of Martial Solal has signed many albums, all just in trio, with different rhythm sections. One of the most notable presented with bassist George Mraz and drummer Al Foster. Rocheman seems particularly at ease in this configuration where precise speech of his ideas and his scrupulous attention to harmonic pathways, may deploy the urge ... To Misterio, the conversation did this time with Mathias Allamane on bass and Matthew Chazarenc on drums, both partners totally in tune with what the jazz virtuosity always justified.

The second album from Dave Douglas' High Risk ensemble, 2016's Dark Territory, finds the trumpeter reuniting with electronic musician Zachary Shigeto Saginaw, aka Shigeto, for another set of ambient, highly inventive, and exploratory cuts. Once again joining Douglas and Shigeto are group members Jonathan Maron on electric and synth bass and Mark Guiliana on acoustic and electric drums.

The soundtrack to the 2015 jazz biopic Born to Be Blue features music that strongly evinces, but never quite lives up to, the sound of the film's main protagonist, the late trumpeter/vocalist Chet Baker. Starring Ethan Hawke as Baker and directed by Robert Budreau, Born to Be Blue is a semi-fictitious retelling of Baker's life set during his career comeback in the 1960s.

Pianist, composer, and educator Tuomo Uusitalo—born in Finland and, since 2012, a resident fixture of the New York City jazz scene - offers up something special in Love Song, his second album as leader. Special, not only because with it Uusitalo has rewritten his name into the ledger of modern jazz in flowing script, but also because he has come more maturely into his own as an improviser. For while we can still count on the virtuosity that distinguished his debut, here Uusitalo tempers that virtuosity in the furnace of life.

Having conquered two major health challenges – one life-threatening and one career-threatening – and resettled into the placid enclave of Laguna Beach, the Paris-born, classically-trained hit-maker resumes his recording career Friday with the release of his Woodward Avenue Records debut, “Laguna Beach.” The title cut, which preceded the celebratory set of Antoine’s signature classical acoustic and nylon-string guitar melodies, quixotic gypsy jazz forays, brassy funk grooves and sultry Latin, Brazilian and Cuban rhythms, is already No. 5 on the Billboard songs chart, offering a last gasp of summer.
