“Into the silence” is trumpeter Avishai Cohen’s debut as leader for the ECM label, and what a breathtaking album it is. The six compositions were written by Cohen during the six months that followed his father’s passing in November 2014. During his father’s final few weeks, Cohen listened almost constantly to an album of Rachmaninoff’s solo piano music. The trumpeter plays with a very personal, deeply moving tone that is not only touching and soulful, but also free-spirited and open.

Here’s veteran reedman Houston Person rolling in the deep again, his tone resonant as ever, his primary focus the Great American Songbook and its enduring lyricism. Unmistakably in his element, relaxed and yet fully engaged, the tenor saxophonist is clearly inspired not only by the stream of mostly classic melodies that comprise this collection, but also by the close kinship of vibraphonist Steve Nelson, pianist Lafayette Harris Jr., bassist Ray Drummond and drummer Lewis Nash.

The recording at the Atomino Studio was a meeting of friends, a joint project with many try outs and a lot of fun. „Wooden Playground“ is the result, which will be released in the end of July. It will be the beginning of an album series from Northern Lite, which will be difficult to all other projects and which will be unplanned from the beginning till the end.

Really, the title says it all. The classic Bop era is alive and well in the form of Bop, the new CD by veteran musicians Jeff Lorber and Chuck Loeb. The disc was put together to help find a cure for PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease) which inflicts Lorber and members of his family. Bop is a fantastic jazz album from a group of exceptional players who have risen to the occasion to help out a friend.

The 14 tracks collected here date from 1960 to 1986 and include a few obvious but undeniably great landmark examples of vocal and spiritual jazz, as well as many lesser-known yet no less enjoyable selections. Beginning with Max Roach and then-wife Abbey Lincoln's rage-filled "Tears for Johannesburg," we then move through years and temperament with pieces from Pharoah Sanders, Charles Mingus, Clifford Jordan, Eddie Gale, and Gary Bartz. There are lots of ensembles and larger groups who bring the collective energy and impulses of the music and lyrics to full force.

One of the most recognized and highly respected guitarists around, Lee Ritenour, has contributed so much in his 40 years of makingLee Ritenour CD the sweet, funky, sophisticated, straight-ahead, and contemporary jazz music. His accomplishments are abundant as one who celebrated five decades as a guitarist back in 2010 and now, with this latest release, commemorates 40 years since his debut recording First Course on Epic Records. He has picked up or been nominated for award after award, been a member of the prestigious jazz group Fourplay, and spearheaded the ongoing Six String Theory Competition which shines the spotlight on aspiring musicians.

Freddy Cole’s latest HighNote release, his eighth in 10 years, is a sort of 50th anniversary gift to himself, and to his listeners. In 1964, Cole made his LP debut with a fine, blues-tinged collection called Waiter, Ask the Man to Play the Blues. It should have set him on the path to stardom, but he sounded a bit too much like big brother Nat. Backing Cole this time out is a superb ensemble of musicians including pianist John di Martino, drummer Curtis Boyd, bassist Elias Bailey, and guitarist Randy Napoleon. This is urbane yet earthy vocal jazz performed by a true master of the genre.

Michel Petrucciani's brother, Philippe, and singer Nathalie Blanc bring us this very special album as a tribute to the much missed pianist . Philippe often accompanied Michel on guitar - He was an ace on six strings, having grown up listening to Kenny Burrell and Wes Montgomery. Michel saw his compositions as songs and dreamed of putting words to them.
