This terrific recording from young French saxophone star Emile Parisien special. There’s an easy creativity in the compositions that brings a constant variety to the set, and a total commitment to each of the styles the group work through. It’s a new group, too, audibly enjoying discovering what they can do. Parisien, a multi-award winner in France, has departed from his decade-old quartet, and recruited three new cohorts – Manu Codjia on guitar, Simon Tailleu on bass, and Mario Costa on drums. Joachim Kühn, who lived for many years in Paris, makes it a quintet, and brings half a century’s experience of every kind of piano playing into the mix.

After four post-college years trying to turn her music major into a singing career in New York, Shola Adisa-Farrar, FCLC ’06, was unsatisfied. She packed up and moved to Paris, where, like a lot of expats, she survived at first by cobbling together a variety of jobs. The second album from Dave Douglas' High Risk ensemble, 2016's Dark Territory, finds the trumpeter reuniting with electronic musician Zachary Shigeto Saginaw, aka Shigeto, for another set of ambient, highly inventive, and exploratory cuts. Once again joining Douglas and Shigeto are group members Jonathan Maron on electric and synth bass and Mark Guiliana on acoustic and electric drums.

The soundtrack to the 2015 jazz biopic Born to Be Blue features music that strongly evinces, but never quite lives up to, the sound of the film's main protagonist, the late trumpeter/vocalist Chet Baker. Starring Ethan Hawke as Baker and directed by Robert Budreau, Born to Be Blue is a semi-fictitious retelling of Baker's life set during his career comeback in the 1960s.

Pianist, composer, and educator Tuomo Uusitalo—born in Finland and, since 2012, a resident fixture of the New York City jazz scene - offers up something special in Love Song, his second album as leader. Special, not only because with it Uusitalo has rewritten his name into the ledger of modern jazz in flowing script, but also because he has come more maturely into his own as an improviser. For while we can still count on the virtuosity that distinguished his debut, here Uusitalo tempers that virtuosity in the furnace of life.
