Emil Viklicky of the Czech Republic (1948) was introduced to Japanese jazz fans by Venus Records with his debut CD Sinfonietta which featured classical composer Leos Janacek's music and his own compositions based on or inspired by Moravian songs. Viklicky's second release from Venus is also a unique concept album. It's a tribute to the internationally renowned Japanese novelist Haruki Murakami, whose recent work featured Janacek's Sinfonietta as an important device. Viklicky met Murakami in 2010 and was surprised how well the writer was versed with the music of Janacek. A while later, he decided to dedicate his second album for Venus to Murakami, who is also known as a jazz afficionado.

Heather Powell definitely has flawless vocal technique, as she more than likely has been classically trained. She has the ability to project to the back of the house with pitch-perfect accuracy, a skill only seen in well-trained opera and musical theatre singers. An unfortunate side effect of this level of skill is that the emotional projection can be sacrificed in favor of technique. This is the case with most of the songs on "A Haze of Grays and Blue", though it is clear with her lyrics that there is something very emotional and personal Powell wanted to connote.

Rick Braun is a smooth jazz trumpet player, multi-instrumentalist and often producer. Braun, like fellow contemporary jazz trumpeter Chris Botti, has always managed to turn what could be a disadvantage for his chosen instrument into a virtue.
