Natalia Mateo – Polish Singer presenting her “Heart Of Darkness”. The great thing about her act is that she includes several songs in her native Polish language which gives the whole show a sort of a folk/world ambiance and also a bit of an exotic touch even though this is the language of our direct neighbors, but it still sounds charmingly strange. Natalia is presenting music of her upcoming release, the ACT Music album “Heart Of Darkness” (out on March 27th) which, for example, includes the wonderfully melancholic traditional polish song “Trudno”. In fact, some of the songs are more like a seance. And there is the air of sadness and mourning hanging in the room.

This is Brazilian singer, songwriter, and instrumentalist Ed Motta‘s 12th album, produced by Kamau Kenyatta (producer for Gregory Porter and an upcoming project by Detroit singer Kathy Kosins) in Los Angeles. The similarity to both Donald Fagen and Frank McComb, especially in the opening midtempo, swaying track “Captain’s Refusal”, is enormous.

US composer and arranger Maria Schneider's new album for jazz orchestra "The Thompson Fields". Maria Schneider was in Sydney for the 2015 Sydney Festival, and ABC Jazz recorded her set with Australia's Jazzgroove Mothership Orchestra. At the show, they performed a number of tunes from Schneider's then up-and-coming album The Thompson Fields. The CD has finally been released, and it features Schneider's jazz orchestra in full flight.

"For One to Love" is such a loaded title for an album. It’s a joyful proposition full of promise that, on second thought, is just as likely to invite heartache and regret. They usually go hand in hand. Cécile McLorin Salvant is mindful of that, and on the jazz vocalist’s thoughtful new album, she treats love not just as a many-splendored thing, but also as a source of consternation and a time of reflection. Set for release “For One to Love” is the follow-up to 2013’s “WomanChild,” the 26-year-old singer’s debut on Mack Avenue Records, which earned her a Grammy nomination for best jazz vocal album.

Michel Benita’s Ethics quintet has a very distinctive sound determined by its instrumentation and the Algerian-born, Paris-based double bassist uses it in a generous way, overlapping the jazz and folk worlds of music in the process. He has his fellow Andy Sheppard band mate Eivind Aarset on guitar and electronics, Matthieu Michel on flugelhorn, Mieko Miyazaki on koto and Philippe Garcia on drums. The textural richness that Benita can get from the velvety pulse of bass and rattling shake of snare, the smooth sandpaper of flugel and the chrome shine of koto, all moving over Aarset’s characteristic sheen and glimmer, is a delight.
