The French trumpeter’s breathy toned lyricism gains world music flavours when Malian vocalist Rokia Traoré joins for three tracks. “ Doni Doni” (Malian for “Step by Step”), moves from a wistful Part I to a jaunty afrobeat-driven Part II, while opener “Comptine” is an intimate trumpet/vocal duet. Elsewhere, the quartet deliver emotional peaks, classy club-friendly grooves and basslines that hook on a set that rarely loses its grip. “Fat City” is the highlight; Malian-born Oxmo Puccino rapping cogently on “Le Complément de Verbe” is the bonus.

“Into the silence” is trumpeter Avishai Cohen’s debut as leader for the ECM label, and what a breathtaking album it is. The six compositions were written by Cohen during the six months that followed his father’s passing in November 2014. During his father’s final few weeks, Cohen listened almost constantly to an album of Rachmaninoff’s solo piano music. The trumpeter plays with a very personal, deeply moving tone that is not only touching and soulful, but also free-spirited and open.

Here’s veteran reedman Houston Person rolling in the deep again, his tone resonant as ever, his primary focus the Great American Songbook and its enduring lyricism. Unmistakably in his element, relaxed and yet fully engaged, the tenor saxophonist is clearly inspired not only by the stream of mostly classic melodies that comprise this collection, but also by the close kinship of vibraphonist Steve Nelson, pianist Lafayette Harris Jr., bassist Ray Drummond and drummer Lewis Nash.

It will be the beginning of an album series from Northern Lite, which will be difficult to all other projects and which will be unplanned from the beginning till the end.

Really, the title says it all. The classic Bop era is alive and well in the form of Bop, the new CD by veteran musicians Jeff Lorber and Chuck Loeb. The disc was put together to help find a cure for PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease) which inflicts Lorber and members of his family. Bop is a fantastic jazz album from a group of exceptional players who have risen to the occasion to help out a friend.
