Sure-footed swing, sweet-toned harmony and ever-insouciant charm are embodied in the new jazz vocal trio Duchess, featuring notable New York singers Amy Cervini, Hilary Gardner and Melissa Stylianou. The group’s debut album – Duchess, channels the 1930s inspiration of the virtuosic Boswell Sisters into a wonderfully entertaining and contemporary package. Produced and arranged by Oded Lev-Ari, who helmed previous acclaimed Anzic releases by Cervini and Stylianou, Duchess pairs the vocal trio with an ace New York band: pianist Michael Cabe, bassist Paul Sikivie and drummer Matt Wilson, plus saxophonist Jeff Lederer and guitarist Jessie Lewis.

To Brazil With Love, with anticipation, and her first bossa nova album does not disappoint. This Brazilian-born music style fits her like a glove, and her renderings of these classic bossa songs and bossa treatments of other songs are straight forward and without overt surprises and gimmicks, and, as always, intimate and charming. An interesting twist is that she uses three languages--Portuguese, English and French--which gives this album an international flavor. The CD also features superb accompaniment once again from Reg Schwager and Don Thompson, as well as Brazillian guests Maninho Costa and Silas Silva. Bill McBrinie on flute and Kiki Misumi on cello adds elegant touches to the lilting program. Another wonderful album by Diana Panton

"If the Moon Turns Green" was released in September of 2007. This romantic collection of moon-and-stars themed songs were celebrated by fans and critics alike, and in 2009 was nominated for Jazz Album of the Year at the National Jazz Awards and Best Vocal Jazz Album at the JUNO's.

“City of Broken Dreams” is the ECM leader debut of the prodigiously gifted Italian pianist Giovanni Guidi. Much of the considerable charm of City of Broken Dreams is evidenced by the mastery of musical suggestion this trio commands. They make use of many different forms of music in their approach to jazz, if merely to use their colors, dynamics, and intonations to create something other. This a piano trio album that has plenty and gracefully relies on subtlety to express it.

While it may be tempting to simply call Dialectics a straight-ahead session, Kevin Sun's liner notes set the record straight: According to Sun, "neo-hard bop" is a more accurate term for this music. What's most important to note, however, is that the music is pretty irresistible, regardless of what you call it. Nowosad, Greene, Gardner, Bonness, and bassist Steve Kirby have a good thing going here. These men have real musical chemistry, not the fabricated camaraderie that comes with so many jazz releases today. While it will likely be difficult for Nowosad to keep this group going, here's to hoping that he does.

The Welsh-born singer Donna Lewis is one of those rare artists whose immense success on the pop radio charts disguises an exceptional and serious musicianship and breadth of repertoire. Lewis’ new album,Brand New Day, reveals the range of her artistry, and may surprise listeners who know her only for herpop hits “I Love You Always Forever,”“At The Beginning,” “I Could Be The One” and “Love Him.” Produced and arranged by Lewis’ longtime friend DavidTorn, the genre-busting composer and producer, Brand New Day is an intoxicating set of jazz-inflected covers and Lewis originals in which she is joined by the eminent progressive jazz musicians Ethan Iverson (piano), Reid Anderson (bass) and Dave King (drums).

The Giovanni Guidi Trio plays jazz of uncommon originality and reflective depth. On their second ECM album, they continue the work begun on the recording 'City of Broken Dreams', with pensive, abstract ballads which shimmer with inner tension. Each of the players - Italian pianist Giovanni Guidi, US bassist Thomas Morgan, and Portuguese drummer João Lobo - has a strong sense for the dialectics of sound and silence. The repertoire is mostly from Guidi's pen, but also includes the standard 'I'm Through with Love', Cuban songwriter Osvaldo Farrés' 'Quizás, quizás, quizás' (familiar to jazz listeners through, above all, Nat King Cole's version), and 'Baiiia' by João Lobo.

George Benson - is a ten-time Grammy Award-winning American musician, guitarist and singer-songwriter. He began his professional career at twenty-one, as a jazz guitarist. Benson uses a rest-stroke picking technique similar to that of gypsy jazz players such as Django Reinhardt.

This live CD is a fresh, energetic and unique approach to jazz standards and songs from other genres, recorded with legendary musicians from the US.
