In the company of Joan Monné’s delightful, elegant trio, Canela once again demonstrates why she is one of the best established jazz voices in the country.

On Southern Comfort, Detroit native Regina Carter continues the investigation of her family history, which stems from West Africa, Finland, Eastern Europe and the U.S. Carter began this journey on her 2012 album Reverse Thread which was a re-imagined celebration of traditional African music. Through a blend of folk songs and spirituals, she interprets her roots through a modern lens on Southern Comfort. Says Carter, “I wanted to hear the music that my ancestors heard. Southern Comfort is a musical journey tracing my father s roots in the American South.”

The Brand New Heavies, whose debut album hit stores in 1990, have truly stood the test of time. The eleven tracks featured on the quartet s tenth studio album 'Sweet Freaks' are just the latest proof of that full of irresistible grooves, well thought-out melodies and as much lively energy and enthusiasm as on any of their highly successful early outings. Everything came together in a comparable short time span of less than four months. And that included writing, arranging, recording, as well as mixing the entire disc by themselves.

The Moment is the seventh studio album by saxophonist Kenny G. It was released by Arista Records in 1996, and reached #1 on the Billboard Top Contemporary Jazz Albums chart, #2 on the Billboard 200, #9 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and #16 on the Canadian Albums Chart.

Larsen is a Norwegian string swing guitar virtuoso, and not the one we would suspect to record music inspired by Frank Zappa. This production is noteworthy for the way it accurately resembles the more jazzy excursions of Zappa, as well as for the fact that former Mothers of Invention members Tommy Mars, Bruce Fowler, Arthur Barrow and Jimmy Carl Black appear on it. In fact Barrow engineered the recording and Mars plays keyboards throughout, with Fowler adding some delicious trombone.

All-star albums are usually dodgy affairs, but the over-arching talents - and, more importantly, production experience - of Masters at Work's Kenny Dope and Little Louie Vega keep Nuyorican Soul from being overburdened with cooks. Roy Ayers, George Benson, and Jazzy Jeff contribute prominently to four tracks, and vocalists Jocelyn Brown and India (Vega's wife) are heard as well, but over half of the album is comprised of instrumental tracks - several which include Tito Puente on vibes and timbales, flutist Dave Valentin, trumpeter Charlie Sepulveda, organist/arranger Hilton Ruiz, and trombonist Steve Turre. In keeping with Masters at Work's heritage, most of the album is Latin in feel and jazzy in composition, but with ever-present synths and piano runs that belie their heavy dance heritage. Not that it's a crowded field, but Nuyorican Soul is one of the best all-star dance albums ever recorded.

Her new solo album will feature guests; Booker T, Greg Allman, Joe Perry, Keb Mo and Waddy Wachtel to name a few. As the guest list would suggest, this album plays on her jazz roots while expanding into a horn based pop/soul sound.

With the release of Slam Dunk, Gerald Albright continues his reign supreme as the genre's most compelling and consistent artist. Fans will hear his searing and soulful sax lines on this twelve-track recording. And, they'll be in for a surprise, as Albright shows off his chops as a bassist, along with his ebullient tenor, baritone and soprano saxophone arrangements on his own compositions, and his super covers of classics by Phil Collins and James Brown, with special guest vocalist Peabo Bryson.

Jhelisa's second album for Dorado finds her delving into darker territory, both musically and lyrically -- with themes ranging from child abuse to pre-arranged marriage. Her own arrangements and music-writing enhance the personality of Language Electric, and the mood is understated, though the range of sounds -- from loose funk and ambient soul to occasional techno -- sounds more reminiscent of her work with the Shamen. Fellow Dorado act Outside (Matt Cooper) sits in on piano.

Jhelisa's debut album, Galactica Rush, wears its acid jazz credentials proudly on its sleeve - and why not? For the genre, it's certainly strong example to follow, blending beats with psychedelia and Jhelisa's accomplished vocal work. The title track, for instance, swirls around with layers of squealing horns and a sudden exclamation, "12 little kitties in a cardboard box!" Acid, indeed. The humorous personal manifesto of "There's Nothing Wrong" gives us Jhelisa at her most individualistically defiant, while "Hold My Peace" lends some political action to that defiance. With production from Cool Breeze, the album shows its lighter side on "Whirl Keeps Turning" or the cleverly tongue-in-cheek "Death of a Soul Diva." And I don't have to mention the now-classic "Friendly Pressure"; it speaks for itself. And the three lullaby-like tracks that close out the album show off Jhelisa's more maternal side as well.
