The original Ten Years After, featuring the late Alvin Lee, formed in 1967 and made their mark at Woodstock in 1969. They racked up staggering sales in the 70s while staying below the radar of iconography, before splitting in 1974. After a series of revivals, founder members Chick Churchill and Ric Lee were moved to re-form the band following Lee’s death in 2013, taking on board new members Chris Hodgkinson (bass) and Marcus Bonfanti (vocals, guitar). This album is in no sense a departure from their old style – they owe us nothing new – and is a showcase for their long-matured blues, rock and jazz blend, with tracks like Iron Horse, Up In Smoke and the engagingly mournful Stoned Alone full of seasoned virtuosity.

There's a quiet intensity to the latest from Belgian jazz artist Melanie De Biasio. The multi-instrumentalist has stated that new album Lilies, her fourth, is the result of a solitary retreat with just "Pro-Tools, my computer and my cheap Shure SM-58 microphone." The project comprises nine tracks of stark melodies, a groove-oriented sensibility and a smoky smolder. De Biasio's atmospheric lyrics arrive wrapped in silky swagger and a noirish electronic pulse. Nina Simone is a clear influence, as seen on the sexy piano-driven title track, while the pump of "Gold Junkies" speaks to a tumultuous relationship, "Afro Blue" has a hypnotic pulse and the layered thrust of "All My Worlds" rides an after-hours organ sound to emotional effect. Less is more with Lilies — De Biasio goes big with a subdued sound, and the end result is luminous.

Epic in both scale and sound, Melanie De Biasio's 24 minute-long track "Blackened Cities" is already attracting whispers suggesting it could be 'her masterpiece.' Inspired by the post-industrial landscape of her home-town Charleroi, "Blackened Cities" finds unexpected hope rediscovered in cities such as Manchester, Detroit and Bilbao.

Keiko Matsui’s 2013 Soul Quest album was particularly important to the Tokyo-born pianist, not only because it celebrated the 25th anniversary of her debut U.S. release but also because she made it following the 2011 earthquake and tsunami that devastated Japan—which she experienced first-hand. Live in Tokyo, presented here on both audio CD and DVD, captures Matsui’s first return to her hometown since the tragedy, the finale of her 2014 tour. It reprises most of Soul Quest more or less faithfully, Matsui accompanied by her road band of guitarist JP Mourao, saxophonist Tom Braxton, Rico Belled on bass and Dave Karasony drumming. She’s also joined by guitarist Chuck Loeb, who produced half of Soul Quest, and tenor saxophonist Kirk Whalum, who played on it.
