While Jaga Jazzist's sonic explorations can certainly be termed as jazz, they're about as far away from Miles Davis be-bop as it's possible to be, and to label them as merely 'jazz' would be to do them a disservice. There are elements of post-rock, electronica and prog peppering the five tracks that make up 'Starfire', and they all contribute to an album which provides you with something exciting and new each and every listen. 'Starfire' is unmistakeably Jaga Jazzist – many of the riffs still sound like the theme tune to a 1980s Eastern European quiz show – but there are definitely signs of growth. Burbling electronic basslines give a bit of meat to some of the arrangements, which is unexpected and welcome. However, the biggest revelation is the epic 'Oban', where sweeping strings and breathy saxophone give a previously unseen human quality to this most studious of bands.

Jessi Teich is a one woman Mardi Gras! She’s a vibrant, victorious celebration and her soon-to-be-released album, Twisted Soul, will take you to the exotic locales of her own blossoming soul. Jessi calls Twisted Soul "a crossover record with a jazz spinal cord," with a sequenced "operatic" story arc of cathartic metamorphosis - overcoming tragedy through change and growth.

Scott Robinson has been affected a bit by the Roland Kirk syndrome. His interest in and ability to play just about every saxophone ever invented—and some that haven't—has obscured his talent to listeners more comfortable with musicians that can be identified by a single instrument, in spite of being very active recently both as a leader and member of Joe Lovano's Nonet. Pianist Emil Viklicky is the best known jazz musician working in the Czech Republic today but virtually unknown outside Central Europe, despite having developed a delightfully original style by combining elements of modern jazz with the melodies of Moravian folk songs and having been commissioned to compose a piece for "Let Freedom Swing," part of the festival that marked the opening of the new building that houses Jazz at Lincoln Center. Fortunately Summertime , recorded for Radio Prague, is available to shed light on these two unjustly under-recognized artists.

José Padilla, a legend in the Ibiza scene, presents his stunningly forward-thinking Balearic album So Many Colours. It would have been easy for Padilla to make a chill-out album, but instead he worked together with four forward-thinking producers to create a modern work, moving across the genres held together by the Balearic umbrella. Padilla is loved by many for his work soundtracking sunsets at the Café del Mar and compiling the seminal Café del Mar compilations, which sold over six million copies.

Sharply Detached is Stevie T and Michael Arthur formed in 2010, Stevie and Michael have been writing and preforming together since 2005. As musicians they have performed and recorded with some of the best. As a record production team they worked on dozens of projects, winning BC Interior Music Awards Engineer of the Year in 2008 and were also nominated for Producers of the year.

"Smile" is another fine set of mellow and acoustic guitar led Smooth Jazz grooves from Peter White. The opener ‘Smile’ enjoys a nice vocal from Mindi Abair. ‘In Rainbows’ is a typical White composition and his guitar work is particularly lyrical. Instrumentals like ‘Floatin In Air’, ‘Head Over Heels’ and ‘Awakening’ show Peter’s deft touch. ‘Smile’ is a delightful album that will please Peter White fans.

Emil Viklicky of the Czech Republic (1948) was introduced to Japanese jazz fans by Venus Records with his debut CD Sinfonietta which featured classical composer Leos Janacek's music and his own compositions based on or inspired by Moravian songs. Viklicky's second release from Venus is also a unique concept album. It's a tribute to the internationally renowned Japanese novelist Haruki Murakami, whose recent work featured Janacek's Sinfonietta as an important device. Viklicky met Murakami in 2010 and was surprised how well the writer was versed with the music of Janacek. A while later, he decided to dedicate his second album for Venus to Murakami, who is also known as a jazz afficionado.

Listening to Susana's Album "Bathtub Rituals" is a bit like a musical Join-The-Dots. Eventually the whole picture emerges- and a rather beautiful picture it is. A unique journey to embark on with one trusted travelling companion, Susana's voice: soothing, warm, engulfing, sometimes melancholic but always by your side. The Songs can be described as a blueprint of Susana's microcosm. Its finely chiselled lyrics put the focus on the little things and act as a very personal looking glass on life. This magnification transforms Susana's microcosm into everyone's macrocosm for the length of the album, possibly a lot longer. Sparsely instrumented with only a classic Jazz-Trio setup (piano, bass, drums) and icelandic Guest Musician Helgi Jonsson, the songs achieve greatness through reduction, simmering down to the core of the story. A rare moment of clarity in this over-informed world. A musical calligraphy, if you will. Join the dots.
