The album was produced by a German DJ duo Blank & Jones, and incorporated 1980s style into songs, reproducing the sound pattern of Sandra's early albums, with the track "Kings & Queens" even sampling her 1985 hit "(I'll Never Be) Maria Magdalena". It was also the first album since 1988's Into a Secret Land to feature Hubert Kemmler as a songwriter and background vocalist.

Spears began working on the album during the second leg of her tour The Circus Starring Britney Spears (2009), while also contributing to her second greatest hits album The Singles Collection (2009). The singer collaborated with various producers on Femme Fatale, including Max Martin, Dr. Luke, William Orbit, Fraser T Smith, Rodney Jerkins, Bloodshy & Avant, will.i.am, and Stargate.

Empty Sky is the debut studio album by British singer-songwriter Elton John, released on 6 June 1969. It would not be released in the United States until January 1975 (on MCA), with different cover art, well after John's fame had been established internationally.
