Finnish folk metal band Korpiklaani are back after three years, and this time, with ‘Noita’ - a solid album of drunken mischief and fun that seems to say that they never actually went away. Nobody expected the band to change their sound, and they didn’t: sticking to the formula that worked on earlier releases like ‘Karkelo’ and ‘Manala’, Korpiklaani have come up with a belter of a record.
However, ‘Noita’ is a tad darker than ‘Manala’, the previous release, as it has some melancholic and slow songs, but those are soon forgotten as the traditionally upbeat and fun folk metal kicks in. The presence of the violin, accordion and fiddle is more prominent in this album, and these instruments allow the band to effortlessly utilise the higher end of the music that the low guitars, growls and drums leaves open. The guitars perform a more significant role too and don’t get eclipsed by the other instruments.
Fans of Korpiklaani won’t be disappointed, and this album, with a good balance between folk and metal, is sure to create many new fans.
