When someone talks about concept albums in metal, Dream Theater’s ‘Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory’ is bound to come up; mainly because it was a landmark album that was universally admired both for its themes and musicianship. Dream Theater haven’t done a full concept album since then; they’ve done concept songs, but haven’t really dedicated a whole album to it. Seventeen years after ‘…Scenes from a Memory’, they have decided to create another concept album. ‘The Astonishing’ is the result of more than two years of work by John Petrucci and the band, and they have come extremely close to topping ‘Scenes from a Memory’, by taking you out of this world and into their fantastical land to tell you a tale of struggle, love, despair and hope.
With ‘The Astonishing’, Dream Theater has brought to fruition what they have said is their most ambitious project. ‘The Astonishing’ tells us a story about the importance of music through music, and what better story-tellers are suited to this task than Dream Theater? The band has given fans, old and new, an album which they will cherish for a long time. This is the kind of album that people will look back on with fond memories; I know I will. I’ll be looking forward to seeing this album performed live in some form or the other, for that is how this album was meant to be heard and seen.

When Dream and Day Unite Demos 1987-1989 is a collection of demo recordings by Dream Theater released by Mike Portnoy under his YtseJam Records label. The CD contains pre-production demos as well as instrumental versions of the songs and songs that did not make it on to the album, or were recorded around the same time. Also included are six tracks the band recorded as a Christmas gift for their friends.

This is an extremely cool set, unfortunately marred by substantial noise and distortion on several of the bonus tracks. Tracks A1-B2 are from the legendary Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club show on January 31st, 1995, where Dream Theater played covers exclusively. Some of these tracks (plus additional studio seasonings) made it to the Change Of Seasons EP, so it's cool to compare and see what was taken out or overdubbed. On the second disc, you get, among other things, the Abbey Road medley and O Holy Night ("The Night") with Charlie Dominici, Don't Look Past Me ("Past [Into The Sun]") with John Hendricks, an acoustic version of To Live Forever possibly from James LaBrie's audition period for the band in 1990, and three Petrucci solo pieces, Indulge In Reverie, A Late Summer's Rain, and Schizophrenia. Some of the bonus tracks can be found in better quality on the When Dream And Day Unite Demos, and Subconcious, which has the acoustic version of To Live Forever (simply titled "Forever").

Никаких неожиданностей в плане импровизаций музыканты не приподнесли. Это все тот же Dream Theater, со своим стилем и всеми присущими ему заморочками, разве что чуточку проще и ближе к восприятию более широкой аудиторией. Слышатся отголоски более ранних альбомов, особенно балладные вещи бередят память своей схожестью с предыдущими релизами. Немного "утяжелили звук", то бишь, дисторшн-таки включили и не задвинули за клавишника, который своими жалкими потугами все время старается повторить гитарные соло.

На Falling Into Infinity метал проскальзывает только местами (если говорить о процентах, то не более 10%), что несомненно разочарует ярых поклонников группы. Казалось бы, мало метала, ну и что? Это должно восполняться прогрессивной, сложной и насыщенной музыкой. ... Этот альбом поклонники Dream Theater либо ненавидят, либо любят. Ненавидят за более коммерческое звучание, рассчитанное на молодых слушателей, любящих грандж и индастриал. Любят за разнообразную музыку, которая варьируется от жесткого металла до лирических баллад.
