On New Year s Day 2015, the music world mourned the death of Jeff Golub. After suffering the loss of his eyesight 3 years earlier, Jeff was diagnosed with PSP, a rare brain disease which rapidly debilitated his entire body and ultimately robbed him of the ability to play guitar. Knowing that Jeff s playing days were over, three of his closest friends and musical collaborators, Steven Miller, Rick Braun and Bud Harner dug deep into the Golub vault and uncovered some rare gems - radically different versions of some of Jeff s early tunes along with 2 songs that were never released. From there, Jeff handpicked a number of musical friends to add to the recordings and give each song a modern twist and unique flavor. The Vault was completed just days before Jeff s death and provides a passionate and soulful overview of one of the music community s most beloved figures.

Saxophonist Kirk Whalum will release Romance Language, a song-for-song remake of the classic 1963 collaboration between John Coltrane and singer Johnny Hartman. The album, which features Kirk’s brother Kevin Whalum on vocals, consists of six romantic standards composed by such greats as Irving Berlin, Sammy Cahn, Billy Strayhorn and Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart. The album will be released by Rendezvous Music on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14.

BWB (Brown, Whalum, and Braun) are nothing short of a musical force to be reckoned with. When three of smooth jazz’s crème de la crème collaborate together as a super group – Norman Brown on guitar, Kirk Whalum on saxophone, and Rick Braun on trumpet – the end results are nothing short of celestial. BWB marks just the third collaboration of the three for a studio album, following Groovin’ in 2002 and the Michael Jackson covers album, Human Nature in 2013. Like their splendid work of the past, BWB is another terrific set of songs that plays to the strengths of its prodigious personnel, with prodigious being the key word!

Ever since he hit the national scene, in the late 1980s, Russell Malone has made two things very clear. First, he plays with exquisite taste, at any tempo and in any setting. And second, his tastefulness hasn't crowded out his overwhelming technique: from the start, his ability to construct firecracker solos, exploding with complexity and virtuosic finesse, has never been in doubt. But on All About Melody, Malone homed in on strong melodies. “I prefer to play songs that stick in my head, and in the listener's head” paired with harmonic schemes that might prompt imaginative improvisations. And indeed, each of the pieces Malone included on this session meets the bill. They also have one additional virtue: they are played by Russell's working band of Rick Germanson, Luke Sellick and Willie Jones III. Together they are able to selflessly convey the essence of these melodies and prove, to paraphrase Beethoven, “what comes from the heart, goes to the heart.”
