In January 2015, fans will finally be able to get their ears on a very special release - the long-­awaited SCO-­MULE album. In late September of 1999, John Scofield teamed with Gov’t Mule, then featuring original bass player, the late Allen Woody, along with keyboardist Dr. Dan Matrazzo, in Georgia for two legendary shows. Both shows were recorded, and included the Mule’s first-­ever all-instrumental sets. The band had begun preparing the music for eventual release while working on their third studio album, Life Before Insanity. However, less than a year later, their beloved bassist Allen Woody passed away, setting the Mule on a different path. The idea of releasing SCO-­MULE came up over the years, but the timing was never as right as it is now – helping to mark Gov’t Mule’s 20th Anniversary.

Katie Thiroux is a bassist and vocalist of outstanding talent and determination. Coming from a musical family in Los Angeles, she was surrounded by music; beginning with violin lessons at age 4 then switching to the acoustic bass at age 8.

This is an exceptional Acoustic Alchemy album. Their body of studio work is great. I've been following them from the start, and I've enjoyed the evolution of their sound album to album. Seeing them live is always a joy, usually as a 5 piece - 2 guitars, keyboards, bass and drums with the occasional guest on saxophone or trumpet. This live album was recorded in London with the latest incarnation of the group (and no guest). It must have been recorded at the Pizza Express, Dean Street, but the album notes don't say that. That's the only London venue that I know they've played in the last few years. I've seen them there and at The Stables, but not last year or this. Listening to this album that's now a big regret, but this makes up for it big time. The live setting allows them to relax and stretch out the arrangements. There is an extra energy and immediacy to their interplay that is really difficult to recreate in the studio, and this recording captures that live essence perfectly.

With over 30 years of playing and 17 solo albums to his credit (including this one), soulful sax giant Richard Elliot has a lot for which to be thankful. Legions of fans flock to hear and see this Richard Elliot CDsaxman whether he’s performing as a solo act or as part of a group such as Dave Koz’s Summer Horns or his Guitars and Saxes ad hoc groups (started a long while ago and an act I feel very fortunate to have caught many times since its inception).
