Clearly there are two standards for evaluating a hits collection such as "Ultimate Divas," which proclaims that it has assembled the greatest female vocalists of our time. The first and most important standard is whether or not these are indeed the greatest female vocalists that you could put together on one album (the second caveat seems to be that the singers are of child bearing age as of 1999, since the wunderkind of the bunch is either Toni Braxton or Mary J. Blige, but I am not looking up dates of birth). This album starts with Billie Holiday and ends with Aretha Franklin, it has Lena, Horne, Sarah Vaughn and Ella Fitzgerald, you get Tina Turner and Diana Ross, there is Annie Lennox and Toni Braxton, and you have Patti LaBelle and Whitney Houston and that still leaves four more.

Really, the title says it all. The classic Bop era is alive and well in the form of Bop, the new CD by veteran musicians Jeff Lorber and Chuck Loeb. The disc was put together to help find a cure for PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease) which inflicts Lorber and members of his family. Bop is a fantastic jazz album from a group of exceptional players who have risen to the occasion to help out a friend.

Beginning with Max Roach and then-wife Abbey Lincoln's rage-filled "Tears for Johannesburg," we then move through years and temperament with pieces from Pharoah Sanders, Charles Mingus, Clifford Jordan, Eddie Gale, and Gary Bartz. There are lots of ensembles and larger groups who bring the collective energy and impulses of the music and lyrics to full force.

One of the most recognized and highly respected guitarists around, Lee Ritenour, has contributed so much in his 40 years of makingLee Ritenour CD the sweet, funky, sophisticated, straight-ahead, and contemporary jazz music.
