It takes a pretty confident artist to decide to take on a project that pays tribute to one of the greatest jazz & R&B artists of modern time – the iconic George Benson. Such an artist just stepped up, grabbed his “axe,” and said Let’s do this and do it right. What you have here is that artist, U-Nam, laying out some sweat-inducing, fiery interpretations of some of the famed guitarist’s best jams. Of course, these are only a handful, but this handful, called here Weekend in L.A. (A Tribute to George Benson) is a great choice of selections. Full of bite and soul, each piece packs a solid punch and certainly gives Benson an enthusiastic nod of respect and love, while at the same time, showing off the glowering personal talent of U-Nam as he flawlessly fires off one precious pearl after another.

London Date' is a live recording of a quartet featuring the incredible US jazz saxophonist Harry Allen recorded at the Watermill Jazz Club with Italian pianist Andrea Pozza, gifted bassist Simon Woolf and ever popular drummer Steve Brown. Fans of the long lineage of the saxophone greats will not be disappointed. Harry Allen can be instantly lined up as a disciple of the late Stan Getz, but he has absorbed far more of the jazz saxophone tradition with elements of Hawkins, Webster, Zoot and Al, and elements from one of his teachers Scott Hamilton. However, Harry Allen's voice is very much his own and as fresh as any on the contemporary scene. With a formidable technique and searing sound Harry Allen continues the tradition of the great saxophonists before him. The material on the CD is a straight blowing set of jazz standards, a couple of great originals penned by Harry Allen and Judy Carmichael and the theme to Star Trek based on the standard "Out of Nowhere".

This band is tight and playing standard jazz tunes in a not so standard way. They'll be out touring in support of this release, so do yourself a favor and get out to see the master at work. Dr. Lonnie Smith is internationally known as one of the premier jazz keyboardists in the history of the idiom. A dominant talent and pace-setting proponent of the Hammond B3 Organ, Dr. Lonnie Smith has been at the forefront of the jazz scene since 1969 when he was first named Top Organist by Downbeat Magazine.

Dr. Lonnie Smith will release his first Blue Note album in 45 years, Evolution, on Jan. 29. The Hammond B-3 organist previously recorded for the label in the late 1960s, first as a sideman with saxophonist Lou Donaldson on albums including Alligator Bogaloo and then as a leader with his own albums Think! and Turning Point. Special guests on Evolution include pianist Robert Glasper and saxophonist Joe Lovano, who made his own recorded debut as a sideman on Smith’s 1975 album Afrodesia. Smith will perform with his Evolution band at the 2016 NYC Winter Jazzfest in January, and additional tour dates and album details will be announced shortly, according to Blue Note.

Her original songs are quite good and somewhat more melodic sounding than some of those found in her previous works. Smash was recorded and mixed by Jim Anderson who has done previous recordings for Patricia Barber including Companion, Modern Cool, and Café Blue.
