The Bridget Kelly Band is back in action with its eagerly-awaited sixth record Dark Spaces, thanks to Alpha Sun Records. The BKB has made the semifinals in the ultra-competitive International Blues Challenge twice and gone all the way to the top of the Roots Music Report’s Electric Blues chart. Bridget Kelly is the vocal focus and shows herself to be a multifaceted singer with her own ideas about how to perform roots music. She delves into both vintage and contemporary blues styles in depth on Dark Spaces and also delivers lyrics of substance with relevant messages. Her partner in crime is guitarist/producer/songwriter Tim Fik, who brings the instrumental firepower to these tracks that he also co-wrote and produced. Together, they’re a formidable creative force well able to make you groove and think at the same time.

This three CD compilation is all the Bonnie Tyler a casual fan is likely to want or need, but if you haven't heard a great deal of her work and wanted something to explore her music more, this is an ideal choice. The Ultimate Collection covers the cream of her 70s and 80s output, including her biggest hits (It's A Heartache, Lost In France, Holding Out For A Hero, Total Eclipse Of The Heart) plus a huge amount of massively enjoyable songs. Personal favourites include Faster Than The Speed Of Night, More Than A Lover, Loving You's A Dirty Job (But Somebody's Gotta Do It) (a duet with Todd Rundgren), If You Were A Woman (And I Was A Man) and Here She Comes. Her cover versions of Have You Ever Seen The Rain, Straight From The Heart and Sometimes When We Touch are rather good too.

Bob Marley is best known for his classic Island Records catalog, and while that material is undeniably great, there are many Marley fans and historians who feel that his finest recordings actually came earlier, when he and the Wailers were still largely a Jamaican phenomenon. Wherever one stands on that issue, the fact remains that Marley's early work, particularly the sessions with producer Lee "Scratch" Perry in 1970 and 1971, are of an uncommonly high quality. This collection combines several of the Perry tracks ("The Sun Is Shining," "Duppy Conqueror," "African Herbsman," "Mr. Brown") with those produced by Leslie Kong ("Soul Shakedown Party") and by the Wailers themselves ("Trench Town Rock," "Lively Up Yourself," both of which were originally released on the group's own Tuff Gong label), and the selections are enough to provide a brief but decent introduction to this Jamaican phase of Marley's career. There are literally hundreds of editions of this material on the market -- some legally licensed, some not -- but Roots of a Legend is at least honestly rendered, with decent packaging and sound. A bonus DVD featuring footage from Marley's 1980 tour (undertaken just 17 months before his death) in support of the Survival album is also included.

The album’s title ‘Preaching to the Choir’ has different meanings, on different levels. When applied to the band Kalle Wallner says, “It’s about blind understanding. When you get the right people on board, there is no need for lengthy explanations. You just hit the recording button. And when you then give the right musicians the right music … that’s when they help you take it to the next level.” He goes on to say, “No need to convince anybody, no discussions. And no compromises are necessary. You just pump it out.”

The concept of the super-group, while not new, has evolved a bit since it was dabbled with in the 60s and 70s. From Cream to ELP to Asia to The Traveling Wilburys, the super-group has always been a productive outlet for both record labels and rock stars either looking for a momentary change of scenery, or a new direction following a breakup. While they seem to have fallen out of fashion from about 1990 on, in recent years, some labels, such as Frontiers Music, have been reinvigorating the idea, albeit with mixed results. Whereas in 1980 a recording producer could play Nikola Tesla with a lab full of exciting new elements and concepts, today that is less so the case. It may be less Tesla, and more of opening up the pantry to see if there is anything to throw together which may resemble dinner. In fact, sometimes today when semi-retired veterans are put into a studio to do an album, many songs feel a bit like reheated leftovers, perhaps unused ideas from yesteryear which may have been better left on the cutting room floor.

“Jingo” (sometimes called “Jin-go-lo-ba”) is one of the standout tracks from Santana’s self-titled 1969 debut album, and it perfectly encapsulates what made the band so unique at the time. Originally written and recorded by Nigerian percussionist Babatunde Olatunji in 1959, the piece was reinterpreted by Santana with a fiery blend of Afro-Cuban rhythms, Latin percussion, blues-rock guitar, and psychedelic energy.

On Every Street is the sixth and final studio album by British rock band Dire Straits, released on 9 September 1991 by Vertigo Records internationally, and by Warner Bros. Records in the United States. The follow-up to the band's massively successful album Brothers in Arms, On Every Street reached the top of the UK albums chart and was also certified platinum by the RIAA.

Над диском «Red» Нино и Insight работали в Берлине, и в ленте мы видим крайне углубленных в свое дело людей, фанатиков, будто бы меньше всего заботящихся о том, как они выглядят со стороны и какую реакцию должна вызывать музыка, которую они совместно творят в студии. Как и полагается в подобных фильмах, музыканты говорят здесь какие-то слова, к ним присоединяются и немецкие звукоинженеры – но формулировки звучат до крайности банально и кажутся необязательными прослойками между музыкальными пьесами. Больше любых слов говорят о происходящем кадры, в которых Гоча Качеишвили получает и распаковывает новую гитару. Вот они тщательно вскрывают коробку, вот с трепетом вынимают драгоценный инструмент – и вот гитара уже задействована в записи: мизансцена сколь проста, столь и глубока. Вообще же в документальном фильме про Insight можно было обойтись вообще без слов: хроника записи и рожденный в студии саундтрек дали бы исчерпывающую картину.

Нино Катамадзе & Insight — это cложная, умная, нездешняя музыка. Это развернутое философское повествование о жизни. Песни группы заставляют размышлять о вечности жизни человека, сопереживать, думать, сострадать и надеяться. Это умная музыка для ценителей серьезного искусства. Суть и смысл творчества коллектива — проникновение в суть сложных явлений жизни.
Презентация нового альбома Нино Катамадзе & Insight «Green» прошла спустя всего ровно год после альбома «Red». Теперь грузинские музыканты вернулись к более взвешенным музыкальным формам, это энергия, обращенная не вовне, а внутрь. С «Red» новую пластинку роднит не только феноменальный голос певицы, но и стремление ее коллег к диалогу с выдающимися мастерами-инструменталистами. Несмотря на то, что одна из характеристик музыки Нино Катамадзе & Insight, наиболее распространенных в пресс-релизах, это world music, в «Green» музыканты ворошат джазовые традиции, остроумно полемизируя со стереотипами «умного» джаза. У гитариста Гочи Качеишвили, что называется, «наболело» — его партии придуманы и исполнены с блеском и иронией и полны стремительной джазовой мысли. На «Green» есть и вполне актуальные ритмические структуры, например, трек «Gammai» опирается о крепкий брейкбитовый скелет. Впрочем, публика любит Нино, прежде всего, за способность спуститься на самый примитивный мелодический уровень, за умение излить душу в простых, но щемящих лирических напевах, идущих от грузинской музыки, но уместных в любой части вселенной. Такие пьесы в новом альбоме тоже есть. Композиции «Vahagn» и «English» точно откликнутся в чьих-то жизнях — Нино поет так, будто читает ваши мысли и отвечает им на своем языке.
