"Трэш - это, конечно, хорошо, но и мелодика бы не помешала" - подумали Megadeth и выпустили "Cryptic writings". В итоге мы имеем добротный среднетемповый мелодик hard rock/heavy metal, с роковым мягким звучанием гитар и активным привлечением акустики. Справедливости ради стоит отметить, что какие-то элементы трэша все же еще остались, но их гораздо меньше, чем даже на предыдущем полноформатнике "Youthanasia", где тяжелые гитары тоже уже были немало оттеснены в угоду слезливым припевам Мустейна.
