Что нужно делать группе после того, как она выпустила абсолютный шедевр стиля, в котором играет? Правильно: изменить стилистику своей музыки. И Мастэйн с коллегами это удачно осуществили. Нельзя топтаться на одном и том же месте или седлать одного и того же коня: рано или поздно несчастный конь отбросит копыта! Примерно так подумал Дэйв и создал данный альбом. И правильно сделал, что, предчувствуя негодование старых тру-фэнов, не побоялся поэкспериментировать со стилем. Стиль альбома "Countdown to Extinction" - где-то на стыке хэви/трэш. И я не знаю альбома, лучшего в этой стилистике (разве что следующий альбом тех же Megadeth может потягаться с ним).
