Образовалась в 1994г. в городе Шеллефтео и первоначально носила название «Волчий трон» (Vargatron). Первоначально участники ставили перед собой задачу расширить музыкальные границы блэк-метала, для чего использовались элементы фольклора. Состав коллектива часто менялся и в 1996г. вокалист и гитарист Андреас Хедлунд (Andreas Hedlund) по прозвищу «Винтерсорг» решил продолжать в одиночку. Псевдоним переводится примерно как «Зимняя печаль» и образован от имени одного из центральных персонажей книги «Люди льда» (Isfolket) писательницы Маргит Сандему - сына предводителя язычников. В одиночку Хедлунд записал три альбома в стиле, все более склоняющемся к фолк- и викинг-металу. Тексты посвящены северной природе, горам и лесам, вокал как чистый, так и гроулинг. На этих альбомах можно также услышать женский вокал Сиа Хедмарк (Cia Hedmark).
