В начале было лишь ничто… Одним ветреным днем 1990 года Grutle Kjellson и Ivar Bjørnson встретились на своей маленькой репетиционной точке, расположенной где то в Haugesund (на западном берегу Норвегии, между Stavanger и Bergen). Они играли в разных группах, Ivar в thrash банде Obnoxious, Trym Torson и Grute тогда только начали death проект с Hein Frode Hansen. Эта троица организовала группу Phobia. Autopsy, ранний Darkthrone были их основными источниками вдохновения. В результате получился тяжелый и медленный doom death. Они успели записать два демо - ‘’The Last Settlement of Ragnarok’’ и ‘’Feverish Convulsions’‘, а потом Ivar и Grute захотели создать что-то новое и свежее. Их уход стал смертью группы Phobia, вскоре Frode Hansen уехал в Stavanger, где и создал Theatre Of Tragedy.
