Группа Kalmankantaja была сформирована в 2011 году музыкантом, известным под псевдонимом Grim666. Первоначальная идея состояла не в том, чтобы исполнять депрессивно-суицидальный, а лишь медленный или среднетемповый блэк-метал. Группа Lathspell, в которой музыкант был бас-гитаристом и вокалистом, начала подавать признаки того, что долго ей не просуществовать. Поэтому Grim666 принимает решение заняться сольной карьерой, так как у него накопилось много идей. У него не было никакого интереса с кем-то сотрудничать. В тот момент Grim666 понимает, что было бы идеально, если бы в новом проекте использовать депрессивные настроения его раннего эмбиент-проекта Dead Girl 13.
