Проект Front Line Assembly был основан Биллом Либом после его ухода из Skinny Puppy, где он работал под именем Вильгельм Шредер. В 1986 году Либ выпустил две демо-кассеты, "Total Terror" и "Nerve War", а в 1987-м вышел дебютный альбом, "The Initial Command", в записи которого также приняли участие Майкл Балч и Рис Фулбер. Звучание пластинки складывалось из тяжелых упорядоченных басовых линий, громоподобных ритмов и чрезвычайного обилия синтезаторов и сэмплов. В ближайшем будущем ингредиенты могли модифицироваться, но основа звука оставалась постоянной, а звучание FLA удачно вписался как в европейскую EBM-компанию, так и в американскую индастриал-сцену.
