Великолепный и условно дебютный альбом Mayhem открывается по-блэковому стандартно, со шквального бластинга. Но тотчас же можно отметить и его отличия от прочей черно-металической сцены: необыкновенно мощный звук и глубокие, хорошо прописанные риффы. Материал продолжается пронзительной балладой «Freezing Moon», достигает своего апофеоза между третьей-шестой композициями, и волнами ниспадает к заглавной теме. Несмотря на образцовое для стиля исполнение, самое сердце у «De Mysteriis…» поистине думовое. Там, где у прочих команд того же поколения бьется неистовая молодая экспрессия, Mayhem предпочитают торжественные и мрачные зацикленные мелодии. Отдельное слово – о самом виртуозном инструменте на работе: вокале именитого венгра. Голос Аттилы опускается до вкрадчивого шепота, легко возносится до эпичного, почти чистоголосого пения и вдруг ошарашивает утробным рыком. Собственно, это и не альбом, а настоящая исповедь темной души, путешествие по череде ее воплощений, великолепно озвученная г-ном Чихаром.
