B конце 1980-х годов благодаря серии удачных альбомов популярность The Cure росла, в том числе в США, где несколько синглов группы попали в Billboard Hot 100. К началу 1990-х годов The Cure стали одной из самых популярных групп в жанре альтернативного рока.
The Cure считаются одними из создателей и наиболее значительных фигур постпанка и готик-рока. При этом сам Robert Smith возражал против того, чтобы его группу ассоциировали с готик-роком, он говорил, что это "невероятно скучная и монотонная музыка. Что-то заупокойное".
