В целом Great Heathen Army получился целостным, мускулистым и преимущественно бескомпромиссным произведением, наполненным воинственным духом и безрассудной отвагой. Альбом не может похвастаться столь мощными хитами в духе «The Pursuit of Vikings», «Twilight of the Thunder God» или «Destroyer of the Universe», но тем не менее выигрывает за счет того самого баланса между тяжестью и мелодизмом, о котором говорилось выше.
