Свои юные годы он провел в колонии для малолетних преступников в родной Южной Каролине, а после почти что сорокалетней творческой карьеры, в течение которой он практически революционизировал всю черную американскую музыку, Brown, по иронии судьбы и благодаря своему крайне взрывному характеру, в 1989 году снова попал за решетку. Основанием стало смешное обвинение - за попытку ограбить банк и за несколько учиненных в особо "яростном" состоянии поджогов. Что, впрочем, не помешало ему давать интервью для телевидения и даже записываться. Выйдя из тюрьмы, James Brown продолжил заниматься любимыми делами - пел и хулиганил, и продолжал выступать и записываться до своей смерти от пневмонии в 2006 году.
