Pet Shop Boys is a British synthpop/dance music duo, consisting of Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe and were formed in London, UK in 1981.

Post-modern ironists cloaked behind a veil of buoyantly melodic and lushly romantic synth pop confections, Pet Shop Boys offer wry yet strangely affecting cultural commentary communicated by the Morse code of synth washes and drum machine rhythms. After first emerging in the mid-'80s with "West End Girls" and "Opportunities (Let's Make Lots of Money)," Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe quickly established themselves as hitmaking singles artists who were also able to craft emotionally resonant albums, like 1988's Introspective and 1990's Behaviour. The duo navigated the constantly shifting landscape of modern dance-pop with grace and intelligence, moving easily from disco to house music to thoughtful synth pop without losing their distinctive style in the process. Continuing to evolve artistically, Pet Shop Boys incorporated Latin music on 1996's Bilingual, expanded into theater and ballet, and morphed into elder statesmen of electronic pop, still able to release interesting albums after more than 30 years, as evidenced by highlights like 2016's Super and 2020's Hotspot.

Nightlife is the seventh studio album by English synth-pop duo Pet Shop Boys, released on 8 October 1999 by Parlophone. After the release and promotion of their previous album, Bilingual (1996), Pet Shop Boys started work with playwright Jonathan Harvey on the stage musical that eventually became Closer to Heaven (at one stage during the writing process, the musical was given the name of Nightlife). Pet Shop Boys soon had an album's worth of tracks and decided to release the album Nightlife as a concept album and in order to showcase some of the songs that would eventually make it into the musical.

Pandemonium plays like a victory lap for Pet Shop Boys Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe. And why not, after the 2009 they had? They kicked the year off by receiving the BRIT Award, the UK’s still-respected equivalent of a Grammy, for Outstanding Contribution to Music. Then they followed up with Yes, their tenth studio album and their most commercially and critically successful release in over a decade, and the Pandemonium tour. Pet Shop Boys have reached the stage in their career where their large fanbase warrants a video souvenir of each tour. Indeed, Pandemonium follows 2007’s Cubism, and features the same director, concert-video veteran David Barnard.

As Neil Tennant has helpfully pointed out, this album is called Introspective because all its songs are introspective. Truthfully, this isn't saying much – introspection is what Pet Shop Boys do. After all, their signature hit starts "When I look back upon my life …" and most of their great records involve a certain amount of self-reflection, which they frame with glorious disco-inspired pop. The resulting distance – the horribly familiar inability to stop questioning yourself, even in the middle of joy – used to be misread as irony. Then in 1990 the band made Behaviour, where Tennant sounded more honest and vulnerable than he ever had, and people called it their first great album. It is a great album – but for me the six long tracks of Introspective from 1988 are more rewarding.
