"Pulse/Quartet" presents two contrasting works from revered US composer Steve Reich in counter-chronological order. Written in 2015 for winds, strings, piano and electric bass, Pulse is a lush, almost pastoral work, reportedly inspired by Daft Punk and played here by trailblazing New York collective, the International Contemporary Ensemble. Quartet, completed two years previously, is more typically Reichian, a three-part work for two pianos and two vibraphones in which the pulse is the main character.

Back in the 90s heyday of Britain’s acid-jazz movement, a hot young saxophonist called Ed Jones shared pole position with new horn heroes Courtney Pine and Andy Sheppard – but Jones preferred the creative sidelines (enhancing rap/soul/jazz outfits such as Us3 and Incognito, among others) and has flourished ever since in settings from free-improv to swing. This is the album debut of his fine, seven-year-old quartet – creatively related to mid-period Coltrane, 70s McCoy Tyner and the pensively penetrating work of his biggest inspiration, Wayne Shorter. He’s tersely telling on soprano sax on the Tyneresque Latin groove Nomadology, granite-firm on the mid-tempo tenor swinger Pandora’s Box, and close to Shorter’s cryptic tenor-sax poetry and wriggly evasions on the smoky, pulsing Marielyst. Starbright – an exquisite vapour-trail for delicate singer Brigitte Beraha – is at times harmonically reminiscent of the Stan Tracey classic Starless and Bible Black. A largely post-boppish set ends with free-improv, a bold turnaround only to be anticipated from a freewheeling band such as this.

The debut album of Lugnet, the Swedish band, has this ease in each of the eight tracks. Lugnet is Roger Solander (v) Marcus Holten (g), Danne Jansson (g), Lennart Zethzon (b) and Fredrik Jansson(d). The five guys get support on the record by Bruno Erminero who added the warm hammond sound to each of the tasty tracks. The five piece plays classic rock that is deeply rooted in the late seventies and early eighties. I would compare their sound with Rainbow during the "Long Live Rock & Roll" days. And even though Blackmore, Dio and Co. played in another league I was impressed by "Lugnet", the debut of the Tungelsta based band. The first thing that stands out is the voice of singer Solander. This man sounds like a mixture of Dio, Coverdale and Tony Martin. The way he interprets Lugnet's tunes is impressive. It makes fun to listen to this guy.

Rage Of Angels is the brainchild of original Ten keyboard player Ged Rylands, who is accompanied by vocalist David Reed Watson and former Ten guitarist Neil Fraser, although the album is literally littered with guest solos and vocal performances, including Robert Hart (ex-Bad Company), Matti Alfonzetti (ex-Jagged Edge), Ralf Scheepers (Primal Fear) and guitar wizard Vinny Burns (ex-Ten / Asia). It’s no surprise that melodic rock journeyman Rylands has put together a fascinating slab of hard, sweeping rock resulting in ten well polished numbers that exude class from back to front; there’s something here for everyone who calls themselves a hard rock fan.
