Sade (/ʃɑːˈdeɪ/ shah-DAY) are an English band, formed in London in 1982 and named after their lead singer, Sade Adu. Three of their members were originally from Hull in the East Riding of Yorkshire. Their music features elements of soul, quiet storm, smooth jazz and sophisti-pop. All of the their albums, including compilations and a live album, have charted in the US Top Ten.

Diamond Life is the debut studio album by English band Sade, released in the United Kingdom on 16 July 1984 by Epic Records and in the United States on 27 February 1985 by Portrait Records. After studying fashion design, and later modelling, Sade Adu began backup-singing with British band Pride. During this time Adu and three of the original members of "Pride"—Paul Anthony Cook, Paul Denman and Stuart Matthewman—left the group to form their own band called Sade. After various demos and performances, Sade received interest from record labels and signed to Epic.

Recording for the album began in 1983 at Power Plant Studios in London and took six weeks to complete. The album's content was written by the group Sade and the production was handled by Robin Millar. Fifteen songs were recorded. The album contained a variety of musical elements including soul, jazz and sophisti-pop, mostly with love lyrics. The album spawned four singles, including "Your Love Is King" and "Smooth Operator".

Поработав в небольшом модельном ателье по пошиву мужской одежды в Лондонской Chalk Farm, а также фотомоделью, Шаде Аду начала петь в бэк-вокале с британской группой Pride, за это время она заключила партнерские отношения с гитаристом и саксофонистом Pride Стюартом Мэтьюменом. Они вместе и при поддержке ритм-секции Pride Пола Энтони Кука и Пола Денмена, начали делать свои собственные сеты на концертах Pride. Её сольное исполнение песни «Smooth Operator» привлекло внимание звукозаписывающих компаний и в 1983 году Аду и Мэтьюмен, отдельно от Pride, но вместе с басистом Полом Денменом и барабанщиком Полом Энтони Куком сформировали группу Sade. В мае 1983 года Sade впервые выступили в Соединенных Штатах, в Danceteria Club в Нью-Йорке. 18 октября 1983 года вокалистка Шаде Аду подписала контракт с Epic Records, а остальные участники группы подписали контракт с ней в 1984 году.

The album, featuring three tracks produced by Trevor Horn and two by Rick Nowels, was recorded in a variety of locations in London, California and Italy.
