The album was produced by a German DJ duo Blank & Jones, and incorporated 1980s style into songs, reproducing the sound pattern of Sandra's early albums, with the track "Kings & Queens" even sampling her 1985 hit "(I'll Never Be) Maria Magdalena". It was also the first album since 1988's Into a Secret Land to feature Hubert Kemmler as a songwriter and background vocalist.

Lyrically, it covers themes such as mental health, depression, loneliness, finding love through hardship, PTSD due to sexual assault and self-worth; which stands in contrast with the positive and uptempo sound of the album. The album features guest vocals from Ariana Grande, Blackpink and Elton John.
