"...We have lived by that word going on two years now. It is the guiding force behind every decision we make. And nowhere is that more evident than in the music.
This album represents a lot of our favorite music from the first season and some new songs that you may be hearing in Season Two. We also included two selections from our brilliant composer, Mike Suby. Mike comes to us via Julie's previous show KILE XY. She introduced me to his music. I found it moody and atmospheric and emotional in all the right ways. One of the things I wanted was a unique sound. I wanted to make sure that when you heard our show's theme - you instantly knew this was THE VAMPIRE DIARIES. The driving beat of STEFAN'S THEME does this perfectly. It is my favorite cue amongst many.
Next, it was important to find the right "scource" cues. It's a made-up word describing songs that work as both score and source music, whether it be a song playing at the Mystic Grill or one layered over a kiss, a kill, a montage, or a moment. The music choices are what we call the third layer of story-telling, after the script is done and the editors have woven together all the pieces of our talented cast and crew's work.
Chris Mollere, our music supervisor, has impeccable taste when it comes to choosing music to go with our show's moments. He, along with some of the best editors in the business, (big shout out to Josh Butler and Lance Anderson) has been instrumental in shaping the sound of this show. Julie and I have surrounded ourselves with amazing people with great taste. And passion. They feel this show the way we do. They live and breathe it. They "get" it.
It's the ballads that we agonize over the most. Luckily, this is where Julie lives. Tear-jerking ballads are her specialty. She has the greatest knack for picking the perfect song for all those special moments. She'll pull me into the editing room and play a selection and I'll watch for one thing: Tears. If Julie and I are crying, we know it's the right song.
Yes, it all begins and ends in tears. And we find that to be truly epic. We hope you agree.
