История «Dirty rotten imbeciles» (D.R.I.) началась 2 мая 1982 года в 4 часа утра по техасскому времени.Именно в этот момент Спайк Кэссиди (гитара), Курт Брехт (вокал), Эрик Брехт (ударные) и Деннис Джонсон (бас) издали свой первый «грязный гниющий» шум, обозвав его песней. Дело происходило дома у братьев Брехтов, и вернувшийся с работы их отец выразил свое мнение по этому поводу следующими словами: «… you bunch of dirty rotten imbeciles». Получив таким образом название, команда принялась усиленно репетировать и спустя два месяца отыграла свой первый концерт в Хьюстоне. Осенью того же года парни записали «Dirty rotten EP», запихав на 18-минутную семидюймовку 22 композиции.
