В металлическом андеграунде существует большое количество команд, позиционирующих свое творчество как "dark metal". Однако лишь немногие из них подобно швейцарцам "Alastis" действительно стараются соответствовать этому определению. Группа образовалась в 1987 году, а в ее первый состав вошли Уор Ди (гитара), Зумоф (вокал), Акронойз (Лорент Мермод; ударные) и его брат Масмизейм (Кристоф Мермод; бас). Изначально коллектив назывался "Cry War", но после выхода демо "Black wedding" в 1988 году был переименован в "Alastis". В 1990-м на свет появилась еще одна демка, и вслед за этим Масмизейм перебрался в "Samael", чье раннее творчество напоминало музыку "Аластис".Вскоре отбыл и Зумоф, а Ди пришлось взять на себя еще и вокальные обязанности. В начале 90-х команда подписалась на культовый норвежский лейбл "Head not found", где дебютировала с альбомом "The just low". Запись эта звучала довольно паршиво, но все же принесла коллективу кое-какую известность.
