Arafel была создана в 1997 в Тель-Авиве, Израиль, молодежью-выходцами бывшего Советского Союза. После того, как произошло немного изменений в группе, состав был определён: Leshii - барабаны; Oboroten - гитары и вокалы; Lord Asmodeus - бас-гитара; Candlelight - клавишные и бэк-вокалArafel начали играть folk black metal, под влиянием Славянского языка (русский, украинский языки). В апреле 1999 Arafel сделали запись их четырех демонстрационных песен в студии Дельфи в Тель-Авиве. Демо-альбом был назван "Skazki Starogo Lesa" ("Рассказы о Древнем Лесе"), и состоялся релиз 200 копий в Израиле. В Европе демо релиз выпущен латвийским лейблом Beverina в размере приблизительно 500 копий, которые были полностью распроданы в течение короткого промежутка времени. Тот же самый год: гитарист Felius присоединился к группе, и Arafel сыграли несколько концертов (Иерусалим металфест, акт поддержки концерта Томаса Линдберга, и т.д.).
