Группа была образована в 1991 году под названием Resurrection (англ. Воскрешение). В 1992 году после периода творческих поисков участники ансамбля решили сосредоточиться на современной действительности и культуре ближневосточного региона, в связи с чем изменили название на Orphaned Land. В 1993 году после выпуска демозаписи «The Beloved’s Cry» группа подписала контракт на два альбома с французским лейблом «Holy Records».
