Наряду с Death этот коллектив является основоположником жанра дэт-метал, причем его фронтмен Кам Ли считается родоначальником вокального стиля гроул. Группу Massacre образовали в 1984 году пятеро парней из города Тампа – Билл Эндрюс (ударные), Алан Вест (гитара), Скотт Блэквуд (бас), Джей Пи Шартье (гитара) и Марк Брентс (вокал). В самом начале своей карьеры команда занималась тем, что исполняла каверы Anthrax, Exciter, Metal Church и им подобных. Такие вещи как раз подходили под голос Брентса, но Эндрюсу хотелось другого звучания, и он при первой же возможности избавился от Марка, заодно выгнав и Скотта. На должность бас-гитариста был приглашен Майкл Бордерс, а место у микрофонной стойки занял уроженец Гавайев Кам Ли.
