Группа Racer X была создана в середине 80-х по инициативе студента лос-анджелесского Guitar Institute of Technology Пола Гилберта. Первым к нему примкнул бас-гитарист Джон Альдерете, и вдвоем парни принялись искать барабанщика. Сначала на эту должность прочили Скотта Трэйвиса, но с ним что-то не заладилось, и установка досталась студенту из Австрии Гарри Гшессеру. После этого с помощью Майка Варни был найден вокалист, которым стал фронтмен популярной в Фениксе метал-банды Surgical Steel Джефф Мартин. Когда кадровый вопрос был решен, группа взялась за запись дебютного альбома, который вышел на Shrapnel Records 1 января 1986 года. Вскоре после появления "Street Lethal" в прессе замелькали сравнения Гилберта с Ингви Мальмстином, а фирма Ibanez предложила гитаристу сделку по рекламе ее продукции.
