Joe Bonamassa releases yet another live CD! This is from the July 2016 show at the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich, London, at which this reviewer was lucky enough to be present.

As the title suggests, this is a salute to the Brit blues heroes, featuring the unbelievable music of Clapton/Cream (Mainline Florida/SWALBR ), Jeff Beck (opener Beck’s Bolero/Rice Pudding) and Jimmy Page (Tea For One/I Can’t Quit You). The solos were long and fantastic, whereas the backing from Michael Rhodes on bass, Reese Wynans on keys, Russ Irwin on guitars and keyboards and an outstanding, super energized Anton Fig on drums whose mastery of his kit brought to a spellbinding climax the initial proceedings with a dynamic solo in Led Zeppelin’s “How Many Times,” but possibly also some of the audience as well.

Night two at Shepherd’s Bush Empire was the blues night and featured a horns section. The set list consisted mostly of songs from The Ballad of John Henry album through Driving Towards The Daylight. B.B. King’s “Chains & Things” made its way onto the set list, a song which Bonamassa previously recorded for The Ballad Of John Henry, though it did not make the album and was later released as a bonus track on the Japanese version of Black Rock.

Joe Bonamassa cut his teeth at The Borderline in London before making his way to Shepherd’s Bush Empire, Hammersmith Apollo, and eventually the Royal Albert Hall. Night four sees Bonamassa return to the Royal Albert Hall, the venue that helped launch his career to the next level back in 2009. The show kicks off with an eight song acoustic set, and then an electric set after intermission, which begins with “Slow Train.” The Royal Albert Hall performance includes most Bonamassa staples, including “Driving Towards The Daylight,” with Doug Henthorn on backup vocals, an out of this world rendition of “The Ballad of John Henry,” where keyboardist Arlan Schierbaum really shines on the Hammond organ, plus “Mountain Time,” the always mesmerizing “Sloe Gin,” and one of the most raucous renditions to date of “Just Got Paid,” which closes out the show.

Joe Bonamassa's Tour de Force: Hammersmith Apollo (part of the larger Live in London series from 2013) was a highly praised "rock night" show, celebrated for its powerful, electrifying performance with a full band, featuring classic rock anthems, killer solos, and a great mix of electric and acoustic elements, proving Bonamassa was at the peak of his powers, even if the studio-like audio fades between tracks drew mixed reactions from some fans.

As Joe Bonamassa grows his reputation as one of the world s greatest guitar players, he is also evolving into a charismatic blues-rock star and singer-songwriter of stylistic depth and emotional resonance. His ability to connect with live concert audiences is transformational, and his latest project, the live acoustic 2-disc CD/DVD/Blu-ray Joe Bonamassa: An Acoustic Evening at the Vienna Opera House (J&R Adventures) captures the magnetism and maturity Bonamassa showcases as an artist.
Joe Bonamassa: An Acoustic Evening at the Vienna Opera House, to be released in March 2013, was recorded at the historic Vienna Opera House last July during a very special two-week long unplugged tour, played to a limited audience over seven exclusive European shows. Varying from his predominantly electric blues shows, this presentation was an all-acoustic concert performance, making it a unique and very special show fans had been waiting years to experience.
Produced by long-time collaborator Kevin Shirley, Joe is supported on his vintage acoustic instruments by an eclectic assortment of craftsmen from around the globe. They include: Gerry O Connor, a music historian and traditional Irish fiddler from many generations of Irish music, on Irish fiddle, mandolin, and Irish banjo; Swedish multi-instrumentalist Mats Wester will play the Nyckelharpa, a Swedish keyed-fiddle; Los Angeles keyboard maestro Arlan Schierbaum, whose extensive recording career focuses on organic instruments, plays accordions, celeste, toy pianos, and more; and legendary Puerto Rican percussionist, Lenny Castro, whose works spans genres and reads like a who's who of artists, including the Rolling Stones, Sir Elton John, Eric Clapton, Boz Scaggs, Toto, Stevie Wonder, David Sanborn, Avenged Sevenfold, Little Feat, Tom Petty, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and many more.

Following the success of his “Sloe Gin” and “Live From Nowhere In Particular” albums Joe Bonamassa returned to the studio with producer Kevin Shirley and came up with another exciting quality mixture of originals and covers in the shape of “The Ballad of John Henry”.

Dirty, gritty and bluesy, but polished where necessarry and with a great overall feeling of class and quality would be the best description I could give in one line.

Talking in more depth though opening track and title cut ‘The Ballad of John Henry’ has a great driving rhythm with a strutting stomping riff and an instantly singable vocal melody. The quieter part to the verse helps to accentuate the power of the chorus and adds to the overall quality of the track. This is rock blues crossover composing at its best. Despite being the subject of a million blues related tracks though this has a far more hard rock feel about it and the part around the two and a three quarter minute mark is straight from the Led Zeppelin songwriting book. It is certainly my favourite track from the album and for me it is one of the best tracks he has ever recorded.

So, It's Like That is the second studio album by American blues-rock musician Joe Bonamassa. Recorded largely at Harddrive Recording Studio in North Hollywood, California and Blue Iron Gate Studio in Santa Monica, California, it was primarily produced by Clif Magness, with additional production by Dave Bassett, Matt Chiaravalle and Richard Feldman. The album was released on August 13, 2002 by Medalist Entertainment and topped the US Billboard Top Blues Albums chart.
Contrary to Bonamassa's 2000 debut album A New Day Yesterday, which featured a mix of original songs and cover versions, So, It's Like That is made up almost entirely of tracks written by Bonamassa and a range of collaborators. The album is the first to feature bassist Eric Czar and drummer Kenny Kramme, with producer Magness performing organ, piano and percussion. Media response to So, It's Like That was mixed, with some commentators criticising Bonamassa's songwriting.
